I got the idea to take the title song to the movie, "A Mighty Wind" and apply it to our ward. I changed the words and met with a member of our Elders Quorum to fix the music to make it simple enough for a bass and two guitar players. Its a bit tough in parts, but in other parts it really comes together and sounds similar to the original sound from the movie. I have also included the lyrics so that you can sing along at home. The original lyrics are on top and the changed lyrics follow. This came together for our ward talent show with very little practice. The ward sang along on the last verse of the chorus. It was a lot of fun.
Original
As I travel down the back roads of this home I love so much
Every Carpenter and Cowboy, every lame man on a crutch
They’re all talking bout a feelin, bout a taste that’s in the air
They’re all talking bout this mighty wind that’s blowin everywhere
Chorus
Oh a mighty winds a blowin’, its kickin up the sand, its blowin out a message to every woman child and man
Yes a mighty winds a blowin’, cross the land and cross the sea
Its blowin’ peace and freedom, its blowin equality
From a light house in Bar Harbor to a bridge called Golden Gate,
From a troller down in Shreveport to the shore of one great lake,
There’s a star on the horizon and its burnin like a flair
Its lighting up this mighty wind that’s blowin everywhere
Chorus
When the blind man sees the picture, when the deaf man hears the word
When the fisherman stops fishin, when the hunter spares the bird
We’ll still hear the wondrous story of a world where people care
A story of this mighty wind that’s blowin everywhere
Oh a mighty winds a blowin’, its kickin up the sand, its blowin out a message to every woman child and man
Yes a mighty winds a blowin’, cross the land and cross the sea
Its blowin’ peace and freedom, its blowin equality
Yes its blowin peace and freedom, its blowin you and me
Modified
As I travel down the back roads of this ward I love so much
Every person that I hometeach, every loved one that I clutch
They’re all talking bout a feelin, bout a taste that’s in the air
They’re all talking bout this mighty ward that’s growin everywhere
Oh a mighty wards a growin’, its kickin up the sand, it sends a monthly message to every woman child and man
Yes a mighty wards a growin’, cross the stake and through the trees
Its preachin’ peace and truth, even in Marshallese
From a chapel on the South Hill to Foothills Avenue,
From First Ward to Moran Prairie, Pittsburgh Street to Cook,
There’s a star on the horizon and its burnin like a flair
Its lighting up this mighty ward that’s growin everywhere
Oh a mighty wards a growin’, its kickin up the sand, it sends a monthly message to every woman child and man
Yes a mighty wards a growin’, cross the stake and through the trees
Its preachin’ peace and truth, even in Marshallese
When the building needs no cleaning, when there’s no more food to bake,
When the barbeques are halted, when there are no leaves to rake,
We’ll still hear the wondrous story of a Ward where people care
A story of this mighty ward that’s growin everywhere
Oh a mighty wards a growin’, its kickin up the sand, it sends a monthly message to every woman child and man
Yes a mighty wards a growin’, cross the stake and through the trees
Its preachin’ peace and truth, even in Marshallese
Yes its preachin’ peace and truth, even in Marshallese
If anyone is interested in the music or learning more I am free at most hours to discuss. I am fully aware that by posting this on the internet it will most likely go viral and rival Susan Boyle as a Yahoo top ten search of the year 2010.
